Chemical Resistant Coating is a rapid curing, solvent free epoxy coating with outstanding resistance to aggressive acids, solvents and alcohols, e.g 96-99% sulphuric acid, methyl ethyl ketone and methanol.

Description

M-CHEM 102 – Chemical & Acid Resistant Epoxy Coating

is a rapid curing, solvent free epoxy coating with outstanding resistance to aggressive acids, solvents and alcohols, e.g 96-99% sulphuric acid, methyl ethyl ketone and methanol.

Areas of Use

As an inner liner for steel or concrete storage tanks; chemical bunds, chemical resistant floor/wall coating for printing and chemical facilities, bottling and canning factories, pharmaceutical manufacturing, water treatment works, oil refineries, etc..

Feature & Benefits

  • Outstanding chemical resistance
  • Solvent Free
  • Excellent adhesion to concrete and steel
  • Tough, durable and abrasion resistant
  • Very rapid cure, even at low temperatures
  • Hygienic and easily cleaned

Application Guide

Surface Preparation
a) Concrete shall be a minimum of 21 days old and/or the residual moisture content shall be below 6%. Ensure that the concrete is clean and free from dust, laitance, grease, oil, curing compound and existing paint finishes etc. Blow holes and defective concrete shall be made good using a proprietary repair compound. Suitable mechanical treatment such as vacuum grit blasting is the preferred treatment prior to application as this ensures a mechanical ‘key’ for the coating.

b) Steel surfaces shall be shot blasted or grit blasted to a nominal Sa 2.5 Swedish standard. All dust and grease shall be removed prior to coating application. If a delay is likely to occur between blasting and application then it is recommended that a coat of cpr 808 WB Steel Primer is applied as holding primer to prevent flash rusting.

Priming
A coat of CPR 803 WB Concrete Primer is recommended on absorbent concrete surfaces. Apply in accordance with CPR 803 WB Concrete Primer data sheet. For steel substrates CPR 602 Chemical Resistant Epoxy Coating may be applied directly. Also see item b) above.

Mixing
Pour the contents of the  ACTIVATOR container into the BASE container and thoroughly mix, preferably by mechanical means until a uniform colour is achieved.

Application
Apply by brush, short pile roller or airless spray at a nominal rate of 0.3 to 0.5kg/m² per coat, depending on overall dry film thickness required. After a minimum of 6 hours @ 20°C but within a maximum of 24 hours, apply a second coat at the same nominal rate. If the maximum over-coating limit is exceeded, the first coat must be abraded and solvent wiped prior to application of the second coat. Should a non-slip finish be required, then a broadcast of graded Quartz or Aluminium Oxide shall be made immediately after the first coat. Brush off excess aggregate prior to application of the second coat.

Coverage

A 5kg pack of CPR 602 is sufficient to coat 8.3m2 of surface with the recommended two coat system, providing an overall d.f.t. of 500 microns

*Please note, the coverage rates quoted are theoretical and intended as a guide only. Actual coverage rates my differ due to poor surface profile, temperature and wastage*

Cure Times

Allow to cure for a minimum of 6 hours @ 20°C prior to light foot traffic access and 24 hours @ 20° prior to vehicular trafficking. Allow a minimum of 5 days cure @ 20°C for optimum chemical resistance

Technical Data

  • Pot life @ 20C: 30 Minutes @ 10C: 60 Minutes
  • Colours: Grey, Red (BS4800 or RAL colours on request)
  • Coverage: 0.25-0.30kg/m²/coat
  • Tack free time @ 20°C: 3 hours
  • Hard dry time@ 20°C: 6 hours
  • Full chemical resistance @ 20°C: 5 days
  • Adhesive strength to concrete: 4.4MPa (concrete failure)
  • Adhesion strength to Sa 2.5 steel: 14 MPa
  • Temperature range during application: 2°C to 30°C
  • Temperature range in service: -20°C to 70°C
  • Chemical Resistance Guide, Please consult our Technical Department for specific advice

Shelf Life

Store in dry conditions, out of direct sunlight, at temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. MPC 602  has a minimum shelf life of 12 months when stored in original, unopened containers in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Product Limitations

  • Do not apply to wet or uncured concrete surfaces.
  • Do not apply at temperatures of 2°C or less.
  • Discoloration/bleaching of the coating can occur on contact with certain aggressive chemicals, thus leading to contamination/discoloration of the chemical itself.
  • A clear coat of MPC 603 Laminating Resin is therefore recommended where chemical storage tanks are involved. Discoloration is purely a surface effect that does not detract from the efficacy of the coating in service

Health & Safety

Health and Safety

  • Avoid contact of the material with skin and eyes.
  • Wear gloves and goggles.
  • Wash off splashes immediately with soap and water.
  • Any eye contamination must be rapidly irrigated with copious amounts of clean water, and immediate medical attention sought.
  • Please refer to Material Safety Data Sheet for additional
    information.
  • MPC 602 shall be applied strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
